Orthopedic Specialists Recommend More Than Surgery

Orthopedic Specialists Recommend More Than Surgery

Although our Richmond team has specialized and intensive training and experience in the surgical treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, they also have the expertise needed to recommend a variety of non-surgical approaches and other interventions to relieve pain and improve function.

Our surgical team takes pride in using a holistic approach to orthopedic concerns. We usually recommend conservative approaches first to improve healing and gain as much function as possible before determining if surgery is required. These interventions can include physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, assistive devices, medications, and pain management techniques.

Physical therapy uses customized treatment strategies to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Lifestyle modifications, such as weight management or ergonomic adjustments, can help minimize strain on the affected areas. Assistive devices help stabilize joints, and mobility aids help reduce the risk of falls.

Several types of prescription medications might be considered, such as corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid injections, or platelet-rich plasma therapy, to promote healing in tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

Orthopedic Care We Offer

The anatomical structure and function of the feet are highly complex. Each injury or pain condition must be addressed individually, and treatment should be customized to meet your needs. These are some of the types of surgical care we offer at our Richmond practice.

Foot & Ankle Sports Injuries
Accidents can happen anywhere but are sometimes more likely to happen during sporting activities. One of the most common is an ankle sprain, where the ligaments are stressed or torn, or an ankle strain, where the muscle or tendon is stretched or torn. Although common, these injuries must be treated appropriately, or they can increase the risk of chronic discomfort, reduced range of motion, and loss of ability to engage in your favorite activities.

Bunions and Hammer Toes
These are common foot deformities that can affect how you walk and increase your risk for pain and discomfort throughout the day. A bunion is a deformity of the big toe joints that appears on the side of the foot, and a hammer toe occurs when a toe curls downward from the middle joint. These can affect how your shoes fit and cause an increasing amount of pain and discomfort.

Foot and Ankle Arthritis
There are over 100 types of arthritis, not all of which can affect the feet and ankles. An accurate diagnosis is essential to developing a treatment plan that addresses the arthritic condition and improves the function and strength of the feet and ankles.
